Heartbreaking Double-Overtime Loss to Big Ten’s Best

EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 14 Michigan State lost their first Big Ten contest of the season and witnessed their regular season Big Ten Championship hopes become increasingly more difficult, with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to No. 17 Penn State Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans (8-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 Big Ten) dropped only their second game of the season and their eight-game unbeaten streak was snapped by the visiting Nittany Lions (9-3-1, 4-0-0).

Lady Spartans Fall Short to Hoosiers

EAST LANSING, Mich. – On a cold and sunny day at DeMartin Stadium, the Lady Spartans fought valiantly, but fell to the Lady Hoosiers 3-2 in overtime.

Women’s Soccer Parallels Men in Win

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Women’s soccer scored their fastest goal of the season Friday, after the men’s team broke the same record on Wednesday afternoon.

Spartans Score Fast in Oakland Victory

EAST LANSING, Mich. – It took only 13 seconds for the Spartan offense to score one of the fastest goals in men’s soccer history on Wednesday afternoon, leading Michigan State to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Oakland University Golden Grizzlies.

Thirteen seconds into the game, sophomore midfielder Jay Chapman tapped in a Tim Kreutz cross from a few yards out to give the Spartans a very early lead. Read More…

Second Loss Comes to Tough Opponent

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Spartans lost for only the second time this season – to the No. 18 Wisconsin Badgers September 30, 2-0.

“I thought it was a good college soccer game against a nationally-ranked team,” said head coach Tom Saxton. “We knew Wisconsin would be a very good side and I thought we played end-to-end with them. Offense Carries Women’s Soccer to 3-0 Victory over Minnesota

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Offense continued to dominate, as the Michigan State women’s soccer team defeated the visiting Minnesota Gophers 3-0, on September 27 at DeMartin Stadium.

Women’s Soccer Steals 1-0 Victory from New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a game mostly controlled by New Mexico, the Spartans were able to steal a 1-0 victory over the Lobos underneath the New Mexico sun.

Offensively, the Lobos controlled most of the game outshooting the Spartans, 18-6, earning eight corner kicks and hitting the crossbar twice.

Thelen Leads Spartans to Victory with First Career Goal

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Redshirt senior Ryan Thelen scored his first career goal in the 59th minute off a Spartan corner kick to defeat the Oregon State Beavers, 1-0 Friday evening.

Thelen had appeared in 45 career games and suffered significant time missed due to injury in his 2010 and 2011 seasons before he scored Friday’s game-winning goal.

Women’s Soccer Ties Oakland Grizzlies, 1-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s soccer played their second game in their past three to double overtime Thursday evening against the Oakland Grizzlies.

The Spartans and Grizzlies played 110 minutes on Thursday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium, but could not settle on a winner as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
