Chippewas No Match for the Spartans

Coming off a weekend sweep against the No. 6 Grand Valley State Lakers, the Division I Lady Spartans were looking to continue their winning ways against Central Michigan.

In Saturday’s contest at Munn Ice Arena, the Spartans dominated the play up and down the ice and defeated the Chippewas, 16-1, with all but two players gaining a point.

“Yesterday we actually played really well,” head coach Jeff Wilson said. “Much better than today.

When a team scores that many goals against an opponent, confidence and lack of focus can fall into play and that is what happened to Michigan State on Sunday.

“We got overconfident and everyone started thinking about scoring goals,” Wilson said. “We looked a little sloppy, especially defensively.”

Despite the selfish play, the Spartans came away with a 17-3 victory with eleven different players finding the back of the net.

Sophomore forward Sydney Glanz, who had 3 goals and 4 assists on Sunday said a weekend like this helps with the team’s confidence and moving forward towards Nationals.

“For all of us, it definitely boosts our confidence,” Glanz said.

“I think we had a little rough patch going into the break, but I think sweeping two weekends in a row really boosts all of our confidence.”

Next weekend, MSU welcomes No. 3 Robert Morris to East Lansing for a weekend series. Saturday’s game is set to start at 1:15 p.m. and Sunday’s game is set for 11:15 a.m.
