Following a breakout season, Tomas Tatar, 23, signed a three-year, $8.25 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Tatar, a native of Ilava, Slovakia, was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. After being drafted at No. 60 overall, Tatar spent his first three years playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League.

For the Griffins, he had two 50 +/- point seasons, and with his production, led the team to a Calder Cup championship in 2013.

The rising youngster is just now making his name known on the scene in the NHL. After playing 73 games with the Red Wings in 2013-2014, collecting 19 goals for 39 points, Tatar is now a prime example of the success that the Red Wings’ development program can bring to players.

Before his 2013-2014 campaign, Tatar only played in 27 games for the winged-wheel, accumulating only five goals and three assists over two seasons.

After his newly signed contract expires in 2017, Tatar will once again be a restricted free agent, giving the Red Wings more room to work with if he has a breakout season throughout the next couple of years.

Through his career, Tatar has been stellar with the puck and brings speed along with him. In his first season in the AHL, 2010-2011, he played in 70 games and recorded 57 points with a plus-14 rating, one point short of his best season in the AHL.

Now that Tatar has been re-signed, the Red Wings will shift gears and focus on developing a contract with defenseman Danny DeKeyser and forward Daniel Alfredsson.
