Friday’s Future Wing: Petr Mrazek

Name: Petr Mrazek
Number: #34
Height: 6’1”
Position: Goaltender
Shot: Left
Age: 22
Draft: 2010, 5th round, No. 141 overall

Petr Mrazek, 22, is a native of Ostrava, Czech Republic. The goaltender was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2010 entry draft. He was drafted in the fifth round at No. 141 overall.

From 2010-2012, after being drafted to the NHL at 18 years old, Mrazek played in the OHL for the Ottawa 67’s. He let up 289 goals against 3,550 shots, averaging 2.84 goals against over 102 games played.

After playing with the 67’s, the 184-pound goaltender went to the AHL, where he led the Grand Rapids Griffins to a championship in 2013. He had a .916 save percentage through the regular season and into the playoffs. Mrazek won 23 regular season games and another 15 in the playoffs to take the AHL’s coveted prize, the Calder Cup.

Mrazek has played in 11 games for the Detroit Red Wings, hitting the NHL level for the first time in the 2012-2013 season. Combined with his 2013-2014 campaign, Mrazek has three wins, five losses and two shootout losses, while letting up only 17 goals and averaging 2.02 goals against in 2012-2013. In 2013-2014, he improved that statistic when he posted a 1.74 goals against average.

In the future, Mrazek is going to be looked at as the Red Wings’ backup goaltender. In 2015, after the contract of Jonas Gustavsson is expired, the organization will have a decision to make. The Red Wings will either need to let Gustavsson become an unrestricted free agent and promote Mrazek or re-sign Gustavsson to another contract, leaving Mrazek without a job, most likely trying to make his way elsewhere at the NHL level.

Although he is not the largest goaltender at a solid six-foot and 184 pounds, he makes up for it by showing determination and incredible athleticism. For a goaltender, he has a great level of competition instilled in his personality which comes accompanied by great vision and top-tier flexibility.
