The Red Wings made the playoffs!

Yes, that statement seems very overused considering that since the birth of host Austin Goodman in June of 1994 he has not seen the team miss the playoffs. The Wings have extended their consecutive playoff appearances to 23 seasons.

The Wings wound down their season by beating the Sabres on Tuesday and then losing to the Penguins in a shootout on Wednesday. Although the team lost,  they received one point from taking the game into overtime off of a Riley Sheahan goal that took an odd bounce off the bar and down into the net behind Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

The Red Wings could not produce in their final game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. Only one 5-on-5 goal was scored and the team lost 2-1 on home-ice for the last regulation game at Joe Louis Arena.

As for Sunday’s national affair with the depleted St. Louis Blues, the Red Wings looked great, calling up Xavier Ouellet and Ryan Sproul, who debuted in their first NHL game to give rest to the team’s healthy scratches and most consistent defensemen Danny DeKeyser and Niklas Kronwall. Todd Bertuzzi and Joakim Andersson, who have been healthy scratches, got the call in place of Daniel Alfredsson and Johan Franzen, who were healthy scratches.

Throughout the second half of the show, Austin will talk about the Red Wings’ future in their 23rd consecutive Stanley Cup run and what it will take for the team to beat the Presidents’ Trophy winners, the Boston Bruins, in the first round.
