Spartans softball complete series sweep of Terrapins

By Angel Thompson

EAST LANSING, Mich. — It was the third game of the series and Michigan State was looking to close out the series against the Maryland on a high note. After winning the first two games on the weekend, the Spartans were able to close out the game with a 6-2 win, completing their first three-game sweep since March 2013 against Indiana.

“The sweep part means nothing to me,” coach Jacquie Joseph said. “The winning the game today means everything. They all count one and it’s not easy to beat the same team three times. We came out, we pitched well, we scored enough runs and we played just good enough defense.”

The Spartans continued their hot streak from Saturday by taking the lead early. A homer from Sarah Gutknecht was a big momentum boost for the Spartans, increasing the lead to 3-0.

“It was really nice start out on top with the three runs,” Gutknecht said. “We shut them down in the first inning then start with a lead. Big momentum shift helped everyone settle in.”

Michigan State was able to leave Maryland scoreless until the fourth inning.

“We just stayed with our team chemistry and we executed what we needed to do and basically at the end of the game we got more runs than they did,” sophomore Lexi White said.

Michigan State (19-11 OVR, 3-3 B1G) can use this sweep as a confidence and momentum booster as they face Penn State (14-19 OVR, 2-4 B1G) on Friday in East Lansing.

“We will just keep working on the process. The little things that we do to build up in terms of winning a game. That’s pitch efficiently, getting a good, quality outing, don’t give away any at bats, compete every at bat, and get an out on every play,” Joseph said. “So those are some of the process goals that we have for every game.”
