The Spartans, coming off a 63-57 loss against Oklahoma State, are ready to take on Georgetown for the second time in team history in their last matchup of the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic.

Head coach Suzy Merchant is looking for more offensive play out of her team, but she is not dwelling on yesterday’s loss.

“We gotta get after it, we can’t cry about this one, learn from it and move on,” Merchant said.

The Spartans and the Hoyas have not matched up since Nov. 24, 1990, where the Spartans came out on top 108-71, the third most points scored by the Spartans in school history.

So far this season, the two ball clubs have shaped up to look very similar, with the Hoyas holding a 6-3 record and the Spartans sitting at 6-5 after their loss against the Cowgirls on Thursday.

The Hoyas are coming off a one-point victory defeating Yale 66-65. Senior Andrea White led the team with a career-high 28 points and grabbed 12 boards.

White, one of the best power forwards in the country, gained her sixth career double-double against the Yale Bulldogs.

It was a constant battle for possession with the lead only changing twice and the largest gap being 12 points by the Hoyas.

But it was a different stroke for the Spartans in their most recent game, as they lead by 15 in the first half and held Oklahoma State to a season low 57 points.

With 14:13 on the clock in the first half, senior co-captain Klarissa Bell stopped the Cowgirls 7-2 lead with a layup, paving the way for the Spartans to take a 20-0 run.

It was a rough game for true freshman Tori Jankoska, who had zero points and three fouls in her 15 minutes of play.

The Spartan defense was on fire, but it was not enough to keep them from being defeated for the fifth time this season.

MSU heads back to East Lansing after this game, but the 2013 Puerto Rico Classic pushes on with Georgetown taking on Western Kentucky December 21 at 12:00 p.m.
