Well, it is finally over Lions fans.

After a 1-6 collapse in the final seven games and a missed opportunity of a playoff berth, the Detroit Lions have fired head coach Jim Schwartz.

The firing was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, after Schwartz met with the team owners at team headquarters in Allen Park, MI.

The Lions seemed like a lock to make the playoffs this year after starting 6-3, but a severe collapse turned into a third place finish in the NFC North and a 7-9 record.  In all six losses in the final seven games, the Lions held a fourth quarter lead.

The Lions will now look to fill the head coaching vacancy with an experienced coach who can jump right in and lead the team.  They will be one of the most coveted jobs in the NFL with a roster full of talent.

Detroit also fired offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and wide receivers coach Tim Lappano.

It was reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports that general manager Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand would retain their roles for the 2014 season.

In five seasons, Schwartz finished with a 29-51 overall record, including a playoff berth in 2011. He is still owed $12 million through the 2015 season.
