Defense Makes Big Plays as MSU Finishes Perfect
December 1, 2013
Michigan State made the big plays when they needed them the most, holding on to beat Minnesota 14-3 to improve their record to 11-1 on the season, and a perfect 8-0 in Big Ten play.
The Spartans forced three turnovers on the day, including a fumble recovery on their 14-yard line in the fourth quarter, to hold the Gophers’ offense to only three points on the day. This was the second consecutive game that Michigan State held their opponent without a touchdown, and the sixth time all season.
Michigan State’s offense started out hot, marching down the field on their first possession for an 80-yard touchdown drive. They only had 57 yards of total offense the rest of the first half.
Michigan State made some adjustments at halftime, and opened up the second half with a 75-yard touchdown drive which saw Connor Cook connecting with tight end Josiah Price in the endzone.
That was it for the Spartans’ scoring, but the defense did the rest.
Sophomore cornerback Trae Waynes did his job in preventing the game from getting any closer, recording two interceptions on the day. Those were his first two interceptions of his career.
Running back Jeremy Langford added 134 yards rushing and a touchdown, marking his seventh straight game with over 100 yards rushing.
Michigan State heads to Indianapolis next week to take on undefeated Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game. The winner will likely head to the Rose Bowl, unless the Buckeyes move up another spot to become eligible for the BCS National Championship.
