Club Soccer Hopes to Defend Title

Michigan State Men’s Club Soccer team is hoping to reach Phoenix this November to play for another national championship.  Last year, the club team won the national championship in Memphis, TN. The Spartans finished the 2013 regular season unbeaten with a record of 8-0-2.

Group play will begin for the Spartans with a pair of games vs. California Polytechnic State and Delaware on Thursday.  The knock-out play will begin on Friday, November 22.

MSU lost in a 2-1 heartbreaker to Cal Poly in 2011 in the Round of 16, and they hope to get revenge this year. Cal Poly and MSU were both Final Four teams last year.

In their second game on Thursday, the Spartans will face a lesser-known Delaware team, who finished 11-3-1.

Scott Dane, head coach for the Spartans, is excited to begin postseason play, as his team tries to remain healthy for Nationals.

“We have a few small injuries that should be all set by the time we play on Thursday,” Dane said.

“I think we’re playing our best soccer right now and we’re excited for the opportunity to return to the national championship.”
