The University of Michigan always has an overwhelming stronghold on the Cass Tech-to-Michigan pipeline, until the month of August rolled around. The Spartans have received their first, and perhaps most important official verbal commitment from the class of 2015, junior Detroit Cass Tech “Technician” Quarterback, Jayru Campbell.
The Technicians’ young signal-caller took to social media on August 8 to announce his excitement about his verbal commitment, tweeting, “I commited to Michigan st! #GoGreen #GoWhite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM SO HAPPY!!!!!!”
Campbell is one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation for the 2015 class. Listed at 6-feet-3-inches and 190 pounds, he has scholarship offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Wisconsin.
Campbell helped lead Cass Tech to its first two Division I state championship as a freshman and sophomore.
“The Jayru Campbell commitment is big for Michigan State on many levels,” SpartanMag writer Rico Beard said. “In terms of what Campbell brings to the Spartans, Jayru has won back-to-back state titles in his first two years. He brings two of the most important qualities for a quarterback, a proven champion and a leader.”
Rico added that Campbell’s commitment will impact the recruiting scene in the future.
“From a recruiting standpoint, Michigan State will once again gain prominence in Detroit. Increasing their presence in the area will help garner the attention of other Detroit football prospects. Since Campbell still has two years left at Cass Tech, it affords him an opportunity to help Dantonio and company bring in other top recruits to try and put the best talent around him,” Rico said.
