Pokémon releasing a compilation album with artists like Post Malone, Lil Yachty, Katy Perry and Vince Staples was not on my bingo board for 2021, but here we are. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the first Pokémon games in Japan, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. In order to celebrate, Pokémon 25: The Album was created.

Got ‘Em” is filled with Pokémon references, including names of Pokémon like Rattata, Arbok and Raichu. Staples also alluded to catching Pokémon when he sang:

I’ma catch ’em (Catch ’em), never stall out, yeah.”

I have been a fan of Pokémon for as long as I can remember, so hearing these nods to a series that I love is awesome. Staples doesn’t overdo it with these references though, meaning that even someone who knows nothing about Pokémon can enjoy the song as well. It is easy to tell that Staples knows his Pokémon facts and on Pokémon’s official website, Staples said, “I’ve always been a fan of Pokémon, so it was particularly special to be asked to take part in this 25th anniversary celebration.”

Whether you’re a Pokémon fan or not, I highly recommend checking out “Got ‘Em” and Pokémon 25: The Album. It’s an enjoyable experience that brings back memories of playing Pokémon when I was younger, and hopefully it will do the same for you.
