Hey music lovers! In case you’re unaware of Impact 89’s music opinion show then here it is: Sit or Spin! We record episodes weekly that air Sundays at 6 to 8 PM. Lucy Van Hof is our host, providing a panel of guests with newly released songs that our station has been sent to air. The panel’s job is to decide if that song will make it onto our soundwaves here at The Impact! Our guests and host discuss about the songs after listening, and then decided to Sit or Spin. A sit is a no, that song won’t play on our station ever again! A spin is a YES, and that song will find its way to you live on the Impact airwaves again sometime soon!
The following is the list of every song we heard on a particular episode, in case you missed it live on Sundays 6 to 8 PM. There is also a Spotify playlist linked if you want to check out the songs and listen to them for yourself! You will find a brief overview of what our panel thought about each song, whether it was a sit or a spin, and some behind the scenes clips from our studio shenanigans. Make sure to tune in live so you don’t miss our discussions about all things music (and more)!
Episode Air Date 10/13 @ 6 PM
“Perfume” – The Dare
Our first track of the night was a spin! Some of our guests loved this one, some indifferent, and some in strong distaste for. The vocals and lyrics take an over the top “campy” tone that is found repeatedly throughout the whole album from The Dare. Overall we decided the sound matches Impact, and belongs on air. Let us know what you think!
“Homeland” – Sixpence None the Richer
You might be familiar with “Kiss Me” by this band, but we took a look into their new album Rosemary Hill. Our panelist Ashe, and self-proclaimed “resident hater” of Sit or Spin, actually loved this track, but the rest seemed to disagree with its merits. The country inflection in the vocals and repetitive lyricism made our panel sit out on this song for our station.
“Realize” – Vitesse X
Our panel jammed out to this next track, and even had some of their own additions to the lyrics which you can listen to below. With a chillwave beat and ethereal vocals resting overtop, we decided this song perfectly matches our sound, and therefore will be spun on the radio!
“I’ll Go Anywhere” – Mustafa
This track impressed all of our panelists, but we had some questions as to whether it belongs on our core rotation here at the Impact. Heartfelt and slow, this song takes an emotional turn from what we had heard previously. While both the performance and the story within this song wasn’t received in bad taste, we sat this song out simply because of its slower R&B vibe.
“Circles” – Tanukichan
This track fit into our sound perfectly, with heavy backing instrumentals and an alternative approach to the vocals and their mixing. Music Director and one of our panelists Sydney, originally wrote that we would “100% be taking this”, our panel unanimously agreed this song was too similar to much of what we have here already. This track lacked the “it factor” that really makes songs of this genre.
“Green Ivy Tapestry” – Claude Fontaine
We were all shimmying to this in the studio; an upbeat bossa nova track with smooth vocals and creative backing instrumentals. One of our panelists, Sasha, pointed out the sounds of Puerto Rico’s national animal: the coquí frog. You can hear their call in the background “Co-ki, Co-ki!” We all collectively spun this song, despite the genre being rare on our soundwaves. Keep tuned into the radio to hear some more groovy bossa nova beats within our rotation.
“Wish You Well” – Peel Dream Magazine
Our panel was keeping themselves entertained during some technical difficulties with this track, with some more ad lib performances that you can play below. While noticeably repetitive in the lyrics, our panel liked the vibe of the song as a whole, grooving and moving along with it. This track will be spun on our station!
“Baby I Want You” – Jon Flynn
With some intense vocals right off the bat, this track took our panel by surprise. We ended up sitting out on this song because of its overall “spooky vibe” that we got from it. However, we had one spin from panelist Yaz, stating that radio can be a medium of discussion and our station specifically can work to challenge the status quo of what you might hear tuning in. What would you think if you heard this song play from the Impact? You can let us know your thoughts and feelings about this and anything regarding our show @impact89fm on Instagram.
“Gorgeous International Really Lucky” – Coco & Clair Clair
Our panel was familiar with this music group, and decided to spin it almost immediately. They all loved the new approach and perspective on hyperpop and modern rap, and really vibed with this album as a whole. They mentioned that our Music Review team which meets Wednesdays @ 5, had different thoughts on this track, but the panel didn’t care, unanimously spinning it for our station.
“On My Mind” – Thee Sacred Souls
There was excitement in the studio when hearing the band of the song they’d get to listen to, which you can listen to a little clip of below. Our panel was torn on whether to spin this song, as they all loved it but couldn’t decide if it fits into Impact’s sound. They decided that it was too good to pass on, and it will be spun on the radio with possibly more soul music along with it!
“Gratitude” – Foxing
“Gratitude” was an apt title for our last track of the night. A huge thank you to our panelists for coming in and having a blast in the studio! Also, thank you! for tuning in and supporting our show! There was some debate about this song based on personal opinion, but in the end it was a spin for the station and our sound!
