EAST LANSING-  It took Tom Izzo all of two days to fill up Xavier Tillman’s vacated scholarship spot.

Jack Hoiberg, who has spent the last three seasons as a walk-on for Izzo, was awarded the team’s 13th and final scholarship on Tuesday. With Hoiberg under scholarship, only Steven Izzo remains as a walk-on for the Spartans.

The redshirt junior has appeared in 28 games over the past two seasons; Hoiberg received his first career start against Nebraska, where his father, Fred, is the head coach on February 20.  On the 2019-20 season, he averaged 1.4 points and 0.9 assists per game. He averaged 0.7 points and 0.2 assists per game in 2018-19. 

Hoiberg has also won the Tom Bograkos Walk-On award in each of the last two seasons. He has been praised as a relentless competitor with a high motor who emulates the defining characteristics of Spartan’ basketball. 

Hoiberg played a career-high 13 minutes against Western Michigan on December 29. He notched four points and six assists—also a career-high— against the Broncos.

The Spartan’ point guard averaged 14.8 points per game as a senior at Hinsdale Central High School (Hinsdale, IL).   Hoiberg spent his first two years of high school in Iowa, where he played at Gilbert High School (Gilbert, IA) and averaged 12.2 points per game as a sophomore.

With all of MSU’s scholarship spots filled, Izzo will look to shore up the roster with a few walk-ons before the season begins. 2019-20 walk-on Connor George graduated in the spring while center Braden Burke transferred to Central Michigan.
