EAST LANSING— From Jan. 7-13, Michigan State University tested 223 student-athletes and 60 staff members for COVID-19. Eight student-athletes and one staff member tested positive.

Student-athletes and staff for men’s and women’s basketball, hockey, volleyball and wrestling are currently taking part in the Big Ten’s daily antigen testing.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and gymnastics are antigen testing weekly, per Big Ten guidelines. Individuals whose antigen test returns a positive result are then required to take a PCR test and are included in the PCR testing results data.

Individuals who tested positive will undergo daily check-ins with athletic training staff while remaining in isolation. Additional services will be provided as directed by the medical and administrative staff. In order to return to any level of workouts, individuals must yield two consecutive negative tests and be cleared during a follow-up appointment with a physician. 

The most notable positive tests deal within the Michigan State men’s and women’s basketball programs who postponed all games this week due to COVID-19 issues within both programs. Two of the eight positive student-athletes are known to be Maddy Sissoko and Steven Izzo of the MSU men’s basketball program, who both tested positive earlier this week. 

Michigan State Athletics began testing at the start of June and conducted over 3,800 total COVID-19 PCR tests on student-athletes and staff members. Overall, 188 student-athletes and 15 staff members have contracted the virus since the testing program began.
