Impact Mixtape | “Metal for Beginners” by Brendan Flum
December 9, 2020
I get that metal isn’t for everyone, but these songs definitely are. So, here’s a quick history lesson on the story of heavy metal to put them in context:
The 1970s saw Black Sabbath create the genre, which was perfected by Judas Priest through the rest of the decade and into the 1980s. These were metal’s glory days, thanks to Ozzy Osbourne’s solo career after leaving Sabbath, as well as the rise of Iron Maiden and the “Big 4” of thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax.
The 1990s were dominated by the strength of Pantera, but also birthed innovative bands such as Dream Theater and Rammstein. In the 21st century, artists like Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, System of A Down, Volbeat, Lacuna Coil, Mastodon, Deafheaven and Ghost are just a handful of many who continue to proudly fly the flag of metal.
If you’re also a metalhead or want to get more into the genre, tune in to Impact’s The Metal Pod that I co-host with fellow DJ and headbanger-in-arms George Pham!
