The State – 11/3/20

Haley Sinclair, Case deKoning

Halloween and a Spartan victory led to an eventful Saturday, including 11 gathering violations, 24 fires and two arrests, according to East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) Deputy Chief Steve Gonzalez.

Michigan State secured a 27-24 victory over the University of Michigan, and hundreds took to the streets to celebrate in Spartan fashion: couch burning. This led to two dozen separate fires in the City of East Lansing.

Additionally, ELPD arrested two individuals for trying to set a couch on fire.

Ingham County voters will be selecting more than only their elected officials on Election Day — they will also be voting on a series of statewide and local ballot proposals.

There are two proposed constitutional amendments that residents across the state will be voting on.

The first concerns an amendment to continue to allow money from oil and gas mining on state-owned lands to be collected in state funds for land protection and creation and maintenance of parks, nature areas and public recreation facilities; and to describe how money in those state funds can be spent.

The second proposed constitutional amendment seeks to require a search warrant in order to access a person’s electronic data or electronic communications.

Those who plan on voting in person on election day have the option of walking, biking, and now, rolling.

The North American Bikeshare Association is partnering with over 15 electric scooters or bike-share companies for the “Roll to the Polls” initiative to provide free or reduced-cost rides to polling locations on election day. Companies participating including Bird and Gotcha Mobility.

Riders can use the code VOTE2020 to redeem a free ride on Gotcha Mobility scooters, bikes or cruisers in East Lansing on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Bird brand scooters are also available at 50% off with the use of a code that will be released closer to Election Day.
