EAST LANSING- Taryn McCutcheon has a new home.

Despite not being selected in the 2020 WNBA draft, McCutcheon, the all-time Spartan’ assists leader, signed with the KR women’s team in Reykjavik, Iceland. The contract is a one-year deal.

The former Spartan guard was second on the team in scoring last season—she averaged 10.8 points per game on the season. Despite playing through a broken finger and sore ankle throughout the second half of last season, McCutcheon led the Spartans in minutes per game (32.8) and assists on the season (110).  She scored 23 points—a season-high— against Michigan on Jan. 5.  Overall, McCutcheon scored in double figures in 20 out of the 30 total Spartan’ games played in 2019-20.

McCutcheon was a four-year starter for Suzy Merchant. She helped MSU reach the NCAA tournament in both her freshman and junior seasons.   As a sophomore, her 5.4 APG was good for third in the Big Ten. She also finished eighth in the conference in three-point percentage during her sophomore season—she shot nearly 38% from beyond the arc.

McCutcheon and current Spartan assistant coach, Kristin Haynie, are the only two Spartans in history to score 1,000 points and collect at least 500 assists. She broke Haynie’s record for the most assists in Spartan history against Penn State on March 1.  

Going into the 2020-21 season, the Spartans will have a big hole to fill at the two-guard spot. Moira Joiner, Alyza Winston and Tory Ozment figure to be the leading candidates to replace McCutcheon in 2020-21.
