EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s soccer played their second game in their past three to double overtime Thursday evening against the Oakland Grizzlies.

The Spartans and Grizzlies played 110 minutes on Thursday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium, but could not settle on a winner as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

“Defensively, we weren’t organized very well at all in the first half. We didn’t do a good job of communicating,” said MSU head coach Tom Saxton to msuspartans.com. “Courtney Clem and our back line were solid, but Oakland missed some good chances, too. I thought once we finally got organized and started to communicate, we were able to generate a lot more chances.”

Oakland sophomore defender Sarah Reynolds scored her first collegiate goal as she knocked in a free ball off a corner kick to give the Grizzlies the 1-0 lead in the 60th minute.

Minutes later the Spartans responded with their team’s lone goal of the game. Sophomore defender Alexandra Gjonaj lifted a ball into the box and redshirt sophomore defender Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz headed it into the net to record her first collegiate goal at the 61st minute mark.

“The timing of the goal was huge,” said Saxton to MSUSpartans.com. “Mary Kathryn is a lethal weapon on head balls and hopefully she gets more of those.”

The Spartans take their third road trip of the season on Sunday when they travel to New Mexico to take on the Lobos at 2 p.m. ET.

“We will have to at our absolute best out there,” said Saxton to msuspartans.com. “They just played North Carolina and Duke very tough, but we’re going to use it as a growth experience.”

The Lobos lost to No.1 North Carolina 2-1 Friday, August 30th and lost to No.12 Duke 1-0 Sunday, September 1st.
