Throwback Thursday – “Call Me Maybe” | Carly Rae Jepsen

Neelan Bosnic

I’ll be honest with you. The year this song came out I was a freshman in high school and my music taste consisted of classic rock and movie soundtracks. Listening to pop music wasn’t something I would have done in a million years, so when the sword-wielding, illustrious legend Carly Rae Jepsen released Call Me Maybe and it took the world by storm, I wanted nothing to do with it.

It’s only now that I’m older and wiser that I’ve developed a pure and unabashed love for this perfectly crafted pop piece. The moment I hear the staccato violin plucks from the introduction I’m whisked away to a simpler time in my life. A time of the London Summer Olympics, Gangnam Style, and the end of the world.

So the next time you’re feeling a little nostalgic and the sun is out, take some time and listen to some of the best 3 minutes and 20 seconds of pop released this decade.

As a side note, JPEGMAFIA did a cover of this song that’s really good?? It’s worth a listen if you’re a fan of him and this song, and I highly recommend giving it a shot even if you aren’t!
