Usually, comedy rap is neither funny, nor musically sound, but Doja Cat’s “Mooo!” cracks the code. South African performer Doja Cat has been releasing music since 2014, but most of it has been more serious than her latest release. Originally teased in a tweet from August 7, 2018, the full single dropped Friday, August 10, and has taken parts of the internet by storm.

Doja leans into the bedroom pop/R&B wave for this track’s instrumentals while delivering partially sung and partially rapped but fully laid back vocals that rest on top of everything. Aside from being a pretty good track, “Mooo!” has meme focused visuals and includes references to “Old McDonald,” Kelis’ “Milkshake,” and Ludacris’ “Move.” This song has all the ingredients of a viral hit in this hyperspeed internet age while not sacrificing musicianship for laughs.

I’ll be playing this one long after the cows come home. Maybe even set up a barnyard bash.
