Greetings assorted listeners of all things metal,
This week on Thee Hourz O’ Power we featured Kingdoms Disdained by Morbid Angel. If you liked it, you may want to take a look at the previous blog post in which Steve Tucker from the aforementioned group is interviewed by Spaceman and myself. Mgla clones were discussed. Spaceman thinks that everyone and their mother in the world of black metal is aping that classic Mgla sound right now. Not that this is a bad thing though, as these bands are quite enjoyable in their own right. I’ll take just a second here to talk about “clones” of other bands. Certain bands of the past seem to have a large amount of influence on today’s groups. Despite not always being the absolute most popular in their own time bands like Entombed, Autopsy, Voivod, etc., have countless young bands cribbing notes from their playbook. The “HM-2” bands (referencing the Boss guitar pedal favored by many an early european death metal band) trend is especially interesting to me. But I digress. Calling a band a “clone” can seem like a negative connotation at first. But we’ve been discussing this vein of bands backstage at Thee Hourz and the consensus seems to be that if good songwriting and significant other influences are thrown into the mix of predecessor worship, a “clone” band can still be really enjoyable. Have a good week everyone back next week with an extra interesting installment of Thee Hourz O’ Power.
