Tired of huge festivals with long lines and way too much sun? Need a festival with a killer lineup that spans from folk to hip-hop to emo? Look no further, because the Waking Windows festival at El Club is THIS WEEKEND- sans the humidity. Though the four-day festival is already on its third day, it’s never too late to get a low-down on what acts you have to see as it runs its course the last two days. To make sure you catch the best sets there today and Sunday, here are our Waking Windows must-sees!
TODAY
Self-producer, DJ, and one-man band, Dam Funk is a Stones Throw resident that takes funk, synth-pop, rock, and others to flesh out his arsenal of groovy and hypnotic tunes. Studying under MC Eiht and eventually producing for names as big as Snoop Dogg, Funk takes California sound to a whole other level through clever sound design and rhythm mastery. He was also featured on Tyler, The Creator’s zany album, Cherry Bomb, on the song “Blow My Load.” Enough of the frowny faces, go see Dam-Funk and get in a good mood this Saturday at Waking Windows.
SUNDAY
Will Toledo has been writing songs and uploading them to his Bandcamp since 2010, but only recently has he received mainstream praise, following last year’s Teens of Denial. With a heavy-handed Weezer influence and a knack for clever turns of phrase, Toledo has built one of the best modern rock bands out there right now. “Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales” is his magnum opus track, an anthemic scorcher that begs repeat listens. Since last year, Car Seat Headrest has played on NPR Tiny Desk, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan. Will Toledo and company should be able to put on a good closing show to the short festival, so make sure to catch their set on Sunday.
