Our new DJ Spotlight of the Week is Andrew Becker! Not only is he a DJ here at Impact, but he is also an active member of our Street Team, Content Team, and Music Review. When he’s not spending all of his time at the station, he’s studying Neuroscience. Make sure to tune in every Wednesday from 10PM to 12AM and request some jams from Ty Segall!
1. What made you decide to join Impact and become a DJ?
Coming from a small town, I wanted to be around people that were interested in music and college radio seemed like the right fit. I joined starting in a lot of teams and I had to get air-staff training through the fix. I didn’t think I’d really keep up with it, but when I get the chance to just talk and play music it was only a matter of time.
2. What has been your best on air experience?
Giving people the chance to go to concerts through ticket giveaways is such a rush. They’re always so excited and I really feel for them. It’s always cool to get energy like that in the late night too. If it was down to one time that really made it worth it though is my time on New Music Dispatch. I really like conversational DJing and having the studio as more of a hang space.
3. How do you think working in radio will affect your future career and life?
I’d like to think that I can work music into my future career, but it’s given me plenty of confidence and speaking skills. Radio has definitely helped me grow and I don’t think I’ll ever give up on music.
4. What is your favorite part of the station?
The people are definitely a huge bonus to what you could already gush about in music here at the station. There are plenty of cool and unique people that come down to the basement and I’ve made my best friends through my time here.
5. If you could play an artist non-stop on the air, which would it be?
I’d play Tangerine Dream because they’re this group with such a variety of sound and niche oddness that radio could use. If they were on air non-stop I’d finally get down to listening through their huge discography too.
6. What is the best concert experience you have had? Why?
Twin Peaks at Mac’s Bar takes the cake because it was a sold out show that had so many familiar faces with me in the crowd. Other shows make it high on the list for the musical performance, but there was nothing quite like the energy at that show.
The next segment of DJ Spotlight of the Week will be released on 4/3!
