A popular theme in the growth of established alternative and rock musicians currently is to gravitate towards a more electronic sound. The trendy shift can be subtle or glaringly obvious. Mac DeMarco’s new single “My Old Man” is introduced with a bubbly electronic beat, that quickly is made subordinate to the sound of a guitar. Miraculously, the balance works and the song actually sounds more stripped down and mellow than ever. DeMarco sings charmingly about how he sees his father in himself more and more frequently. This song is certainly not something revolutionary, but it’s an interesting segue to the artist’s newest full length album. What we can only assume is the tracklist is snuck into the album cover of juvenile yellow drawings.
