What is it?

The Record Lounge, a locally owned record shop in East Lansing, continues to support and revitalize the East Lansing music scene with their most recent live concert series known as The Record Lounge Collective.

What’s the deal with the owner?

Shop owner Heather Frarey has been a major advocate in support of local music since the store opened in 2008, so when Connor Ruby, an employee at the shop, and his friend David McGuffie came to her with the idea of a live concert series held within the shop she immediately agreed.

Who’s played here?

Since then, the shop has hosted four live shows. It’s most recent show featured acoustic artist Rent Strike, electro-house duo Josh Moyer and Austin Grebinksi, and Act Casual, a jam band from Detroit. Local visual artists are also invited to showcase their work to the public.

Frarey says her goal with the collective is to emphasize the importance of supporting local music, “because there are so many people that have a band or that do sing or make good art, and honestly it’s such a big community, I think it’s really needed here.”

And because East Lansing currently doesn’t have a local music venue, Frarey believed The Record Lounge was the best business to capitalize on fostering that kind of space for the community. McGuffie hopes that the city will realize the opportunity that comes from building a music venue and capitalize on it soon. Until then he is excited to continue hosting shows at The Record Lounge and looks forward to being a hub for local artists and musicians to share their craft.  

What’s next?

The Record Lounge is hosting their next concert this Friday, November 4, 2016. Doors open at 7:45 p.m. Admission is free. Come out and support your local music scene.
