This is a profoundly simple song.
The “four chord pop progression” catches a lot of flak these days, but “To Her Door,” a single from Empire of the Sun’s upcoming album Two Vines, is a glistening example of how simplicity can be beautiful.
This lush tune opens without a beat, letting singer Luke Steele’s layered voice establish the chorus before plunging into a galloping, adventurous groove reminiscent of Rusted Root’s 1996 single “Send Me On My Way.” The chorus seems like a riff on itself, “I feel better when we are together / I know it’s simple but I don’t care.”
Empire of the Sun has never cared less, and it shines through in “To Her Door.”
