We’re bringing in Welcome Weekend with a throwback jam!
Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend” is still chanted at music festivals when acts are taking a little too long to come on stage — looking at you, Bonnaroo.
The song samples Freddie Scott’s 1968 track “You Got What I Need.” The way Markie raps inspired a trend for singing in a goofy voice. “Just A Friend” has been sampled (sample-ception?) by artists 50 cent, Nas, Too Phat, and more. It’s featured at number 68 on Pitchfork’s “The 200 Best Songs of the 1980s.”
Let’s make it one of the best songs of 2016 by bringing it back this weekend.
