A single from the Mutemath’s early November release, Vitals, “Used To” tells a tale of looking back on one’s unhappy memories and what they used to be.
In a recent Billboard interview, lead singer Paul Meany reflects on the idea behind the song, which he claimed was “Leaving a place I didn’t want to, but had to.” Throughout the chorus, Meany croons on about he “used to to feel alive” he “used to want to”, conveying to listeners a feeling of longing for the past, while still trying to move on.
Armed with a pulsating beat, heavy drums, and electronic chords, Mutemath delivers another melancholy melody with a slightly more sophisticated sound.
