EL VY – the newly announced coupling of indie rockers that had me 1) gasp audibly and 2) office chair dancing.
Matt Berninger of The National and Brent Knopf of Menomena/Ramona Falls are collaborating under this moniker and planning for the release of their debut LP, Return to the Moon, on October 30 via 4AD Records.
“This record is more autobiographical than anything else I’ve written, but the details aren’t true,” Berninger said Tuesday in an interview with Pitchfork. “It’s written in the voices of a few invented characters, composites of different people—myself, my wife, and other people I was thinking about.”
The title track is subtitled with “Political Song For Didi Bloome To Sing, With Crescendo,” so whoever Didi is, we hope they get the message. Berninger’s sultry, brooding vocals work nicely against the funky guitar and bass notes, reminding me a bit of The Strokes’ work at times.
