Happy Friday! Kick off your weekend with a couple of tracks hand-selected by our Music Team members, Taylor and Anne.
Taylor Rummel’s Pick: MNEK – “A Thousand Miles” (Vanessa Carlton Refix)
Fridays are for looking ahead, but if you can retrace your musical tastes back to the days of Vanessa Carlton and her smash hit, “A Thousand Miles,” you’ll be in luck. Why? Well, bubbling R&B artist MNEK had a little fun with it this Valentine’s Day, and with what woven-in sample of The B-52’s “Love Shack” he placed alongside his own transformations of the track, he was able to put together one greatly upbeat rendition of the original work. It’s one that’ll get you through the weekend on a very happy note, without a doubt, and who knows, it might even get you back into all that great (or greatly humiliating) music you got into growing up.
Anne Abendroth’s Pick: Jack White – “That Black Bat Licorice”
Jack White has been busy this past year with touring all over the world and winning two Grammy’s. His album Lazaretto became the #1 selling vinyl album of 2014 along with the largest 1st week vinyl sale since 1991. He even had a little run in with The Oklahoma Daily, concerning his preference on bananas and guacamole on tour. The media just can’t get enough, and that hasn’t stopped him from giving them something to talk about.
On Wednesday, February 18, he released a music video for “That Black Bat Licorice” that is unlike any other. With 3 separate videos playing simultaneously, the viewer has the power at their fingertips to choose which to watch. Each video has a different director and completely different aesthetic that can have you watching it over and over. That’s exactly what it had me doing, bringing it to be my pick of the week.
“That Black Bat Licorice” is off of his second solo studio album Lazaretto. You can find the video at jackwhiteiii.com.
