A rally to stand up for higher education. Here at the Hannah Administration Building last Thursday, three labor unions came together to rally for academic freedom.
These faculty members and graduate student workers say they’re seeing threats to public education.
“Under the Trump administration, we’re really concerned that our rights will be taken away, our students’ rights will be taken away,” said Hannah Grisham, vice president of the local Union of Non-Tenure-Track Faculty (UNTF) chapter. “And so we need to use our voices while we still have them.”
The rally on campus was a part of a national day of action for higher education, with many demonstrations taking place across the country. International student rights were at the forefront of the conversation.
“We’re also looking to forge connections across multiple campuses and share resources,” said Mary Ellen Rutemeyer, chief information officer of the MSU Graduate Employee Union (GEU) chapter. “For example, legal resources for students who either have had visas revoked or are threatened to have their visas revoked.”
With chants, signs and solidarity, these Spartans say the future of higher education is worth fighting for.
