MSU president pushes back on Trump administration’s student visa revocations
Michigan State University is pushing back after the Trump administration revoked visas for some of its international students. In a campus-wide letter, MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz called international students essential to the university’s identity and strength, citing the school’s long-standing global mission.
Guskiewicz revealed he’s in Washington D.C. meeting with lawmakers to express concerns and advocate on behalf of affected students. While the federal government hasn’t explained why the visas were pulled, some reports suggest students involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations may have been targeted — a controversial move critics say threatens free speech.
MSU says its international student office is working directly with those impacted, offering legal guidance and support. With nearly 5,000 international students on campus, Guskiewicz stressed their value to MSU’s academic and cultural life, calling this a moment to “uphold the university’s legacy of global engagement.”
Thrive at Owen to close on weekends starting Fall 2025
At Michigan State University, only one dining hall–Thrive at Owen Hall–offers a fully allergen-free menu. But starting Fall 2025, that space will be closed on weekends.
Citing low demand, MSU Culinary Services says only about 100 students use Thrive daily on weekends–too few to justify the cost. Instead, the nearby Vista at Shaw will open weekends and offer prepackaged Thrive To Go meals, free of the nine major allergens.
But for students like freshman Rachel Maltese, who has a life-threatening peanut allergy, the change is unsettling. She says Owen is the only place she truly feels safe eating on campus. Others, like music ed major Anna Young, who has Celiac Disease, say limited options elsewhere make the closure frustrating–especially since weekends are when they can actually visit Thrive.
Students also worry the grab-and-go meals won’t meet demand or offer enough variety. Still, MSU says this move is a pilot and they’ll reconsider if the need grows.
MSU Student Horticulture Association prepares for upcoming plant show and sale
This weekend, the Michigan State University Student Horticulture Association is bringing the world of Oz to life at its 37th annual Spring Plant Show and Sale.
Held at the MSU Horticulture Gardens Conservatory, this year’s theme is The Wizard of Oz. Visitors can stroll down the yellow brick road, pass through Munchkin Land, and even see a hand-built tornado crashing into Dorothy’s house–all while browsing over 5,000 plants for sale.
SHA members spend nearly a full year planning the fundraiser, with six student-led committees handling everything from design and construction to marketing and plant care. Preparation starts as early as November, with students hosting “potting parties” in the greenhouse to get everything ready.
Profits go toward scholarships, industry conferences, and networking events. The sale runs Saturday, April 12 from 9 to 6, and Sunday, April 13 from 10 to 4. All you have to do is just bring your love for plants and maybe a little Emerald City magic.
