EAST LANSING— The Michigan State wrestling team will be sending a trio to the NCAA Championship this weekend at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
The three wrestlers are the 125lb redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand, the 197lb redshirt freshman Remy Cotton, and the heavyweight redshirt freshman Max Vanadia.
Weiand has put together a 12-15 record overall with a 4-9 record in duals. He will compete in a qualifier for the No. 33 seed, taking on Cornell’s Milani Marcello who is 16-11 overall. The winner of the match will move on to wrestle the No. 1 seed Luke Lilledahl from Penn State.
With a 13-11 record and a 6-6 record in duals, Remy Cotton was able to clinch the No. 31 seed and will wrestle against the No. 2 seed Stephen Buchanan from Iowa. Buchanan is 21-1 overall and is an undefeated 15-0 in duals.
The heavyweight Max Vanadia has a 16-17 overall record and was 6-8 in duals. Vanadia locked down the No. 31 seed and will match up against the No. 2 seed Wyatt Hendrickson from Oklahoma State. Hendrickson finished the season undefeated with a 22-0 overall record.
It will be an uphill battle for the Spartans as they look to improve head coach Roger Chandler’s best finish at the NCAA Championship. In his ninth season, Chandler will be looking to top his 30th place finish from the 2020 NCAA Championship.
The Championship will begin at noon on Thursday and the first Spartan wrestlers will be set to go immediately. Matches will be played throughout the rest of the week with the finals starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The entire Championship will be streamed live on ESPN+ with the final appearing on ESPN.
