MSU Shorter Shower Initiative works to reduce excessive use of heated water
Michigan State University’s Shorter Shower Initiative (SSI) aims to reduce water waste and energy use in university dorms, contributing to sustainability efforts on campus. Launched in 2022 by MSU’s Social Science Scholars Program, the project is a collaborative effort between the geography and communications departments. Inspired by a similar study in Australia, the initiative seeks to address the link between heated water usage and carbon emissions.
SSI focuses on reducing energy-intensive water heating, which often relies on fossil fuels, to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. By studying students’ shower habits, the project aims to promote shorter showers as a way to reduce both water and energy consumption. Researchers have tracked water use in dorms, conducting surveys and experiments to understand what influences students’ shower lengths.
Key findings suggest that peer influence and societal norms play significant roles in shaping shower habits. The project has been collecting data for over a year, and in 2025, lead researcher Kayla Tracey will present findings to the University Research Foundation to assess the impact of social norm messaging and water timers on student behavior. If successful, these interventions could expand campus-wide.
Ultimately, the SSI hopes to instill more mindful water use habits among students, contributing to MSU’s sustainability goals and a reduced carbon footprint.
Student sues MSU, Theta Chi, another student over alleged sexual assault at frat event
Michigan State University student, Sophia Mac, has filed a notice of claim against the university, the Theta Chi fraternity, and another student, Connor Geer, following an alleged sexual assault at a fraternity formal in February 2024. Mac, who was an 18-year-old freshman at the time, claims she was drugged and assaulted during the event. Geer has denied the allegations, stating that he cooperated with a previous investigation that was ultimately closed without charges.
The notice of claim accuses MSU of violating the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, alleging that the university’s actions created a hostile environment that contributed to the assault.
Mac’s attorney, Jeffrey Hart, suggests that the criminal investigation is ongoing and that charges may be forthcoming, pointing to physical evidence such as male DNA found in Mac’s clothing. The East Lansing Police Department has confirmed a search warrant for DNA testing.
3, 2, 1 – Dodgeball: MSU wins fourth straight Michigan Cup, extends dominance
Most would consider dodgeball an elementary school gym class game, but for Michigan State University’s team, it’s become a sport that’s built a tight-knit community–and brought them four consecutive Michigan Dodgeball Cup championships. Currently ranked No. 2 in the country, MSU is coming off two straight NCDA national titles and is looking for a third.
The Spartans compete in the NCDA’s “Pinch” division, facing fierce competition with only 18 travel spots for around 25 players. Recently, they claimed their fourth straight Michigan Dodgeball Cup title, defeating their biggest rival, Grand Valley State.
Senior Matt Zivian, now a player-coach after breaking his hand in February, says the team has meant the world to him. Coach Kevin Nguyen credits the success to total buy-in from every player. Despite not receiving funding from MSU, the team raises money for travel through fundraising efforts. With Nationals approaching in April, the Spartans are ready to defend their title.
