Tracking MSU’s security upgrades two years since the shooting
In the two years since the tragic shooting at Michigan State University on February 13, 2023, which claimed three students’ lives and injured five others, the school has made significant strides in bolstering campus safety. Key upgrades include over 700 classroom doors now equipped with locks, a centralized security operations center monitoring over 2,000 cameras, and the installation of metal detectors in key buildings like Spartan Stadium. But the rollout hasn’t been without controversy. MSU ignored a consultant’s advice on the type of lock to install and faced criticism for its new AI-powered surveillance system, which some say threatens privacy and civil liberties.
Additionally, emergency procedures have been revised, with updated training on active violence protocols, though some students with disabilities have raised concerns about accessibility. MSU has also improved its notification system, aiming to reach the campus through text, email, and sirens. Finally, in September 2023, the university implemented a ban on firearms across the entire campus. While progress is being made, the debate continues on whether these measures strike the right balance between safety and personal freedoms.
MSU’s UAB, RHA host ‘Blockbusters and Bracelet’s event
Last Wednesday, Michigan State University’s Brody Hall hosted the “Blockbusters & Bracelets” event, a Valentine’s Day celebration designed to bring students together for a fun and relaxing night. Organized by the University Activities Board (UAB) and Residence Halls Association (RHA), the event featured a screening of the romcom 10 Things I Hate About You and bracelet-making activities with a nostalgic ’90s twist.
Gabby Gillespie, UAB Events Coordinator, explained that the event was meant to offer a “Palentine’s, Galentine’s Day” vibe — a chance for everyone to relax and enjoy the festivities ahead of the holiday. The collaboration between UAB and RHA helped reach a broad audience across campus, and it proved to be a hit with students like biochemistry senior Anna LoPresti, who appreciated the chance to unwind midweek with friends and crafts.
Zoology senior Abby Deming attended with a friend, enjoying the laid-back, bonding atmosphere. The event’s success was seen in the turnout despite the weather, and organizers hoped students left feeling connected and with new memories.
MSU alumni teams up with Spartan hockey for full-team NIL partnership
Bradley Hoos, a Michigan State University alum and founder of the clothing brand MuskOx, took an unconventional route to connect his brand with the MSU hockey team. After a diverse career path, including working in Washington D.C. post-9/11 and consulting in engineering, Hoos founded MuskOx in 2019. His brand is built on three pillars: quality, environmental stewardship, and wildlife conservation, with a focus on sustainability.
MuskOx flannels are made with eco-friendly materials, such as recycled ocean-bound plastic buttons and cotton from the Better Cotton Program. A portion of every purchase supports the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. For Hoos, partnering with the MSU hockey team was a natural fit. Much like MuskOx, hockey is a team sport, and the herd mentality of MuskOx inspired the partnership.
Hoos, a lifelong hockey fan, saw the potential to elevate his brand by aligning with a respected team. The NIL deal with MSU hockey not only puts MuskOx in the spotlight but also offers each player a chance to contribute to the brand’s growth. As Hoos puts it, “We want to surround ourselves with good people doing good things,” and he’s excited for the future of both the team and the brand.
