Survivor of MSU campus shooting sues university for $50 million
On the eve of the second remembrance of the February 13, 2023, shooting at Michigan State University, a lawsuit has been filed by a student who witnessed the tragedy. Justin Bowman, who was in a classroom when the gunman opened fire, is seeking damages, claiming the event could have been prevented. Bowman says he saw the shooter enter his classroom and fire on students, leaving him covered in blood as he played dead to survive.
The lawsuit argues that MSU’s failure to implement proper security measures, despite having the resources to do so, directly contributed to the trauma suffered by Bowman and others. It names several university officials and departments, accusing them of gross negligence in not addressing safety concerns raised prior to the shooting.
Bowman’s attorney emphasizes that this case is about justice and accountability, saying the university had a duty to protect its community but failed to do so. The lawsuit also highlights the emotional and psychological toll on Bowman, who continues to relive the tragedy daily.
Tom Izzo breaks record with 354th Big Ten conference win, surpasses Bob Knight
Michigan State men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo has made history, surpassing Bob Knight for the most Big Ten conference wins with his 354th victory. The milestone came after the Spartans’ 79-65 comeback win over Illinois, marking their 20th victory of the season and an impressive 11th in Big Ten play.
The game didn’t start smoothly, but MSU managed to turn things around in the second half, with junior forward Jaxon Kohler helping to close the gap. The Spartans finished strong, securing a 14-point victory after a 12-2 scoring run in the final minutes.
After the game, Izzo credited his success to the MSU community, including past presidents, athletic directors, and fans. He also reflected on his respect for Bob Knight, who he considers a mentor, saying he hopes Knight, along with his former coach Jud Heathcote, is proud of his achievement.
This victory also comes at a critical time for the Spartans, as they are looking to regain momentum after a tough start to February. Izzo’s team, however, continues to set itself apart with a balanced, team-focused approach that reflects his “Strength in Numbers” motto.
MSUMA eases the job hunt, prepares students for post-grad life
Every week, members of the Michigan State University Marketing Association gather to discuss marketing trends, career prep, and networking. On February 10, they hosted a special session to help students prepare for career fairs and job applications, complete with Celsius drinks and Chick-fil-a.
MSUMA aims to help students feel confident about entering the ever-evolving field of marketing. President Ennalyse Fretz shared her own journey, recalling the uncertainty of her freshman year and how MSUMA became a community where she found support and direction.
The group’s first members-only meeting of the semester featured guest speaker Molly Longman, a peer career coach from the Russell Palmer Career Center. She gave valuable advice on how to network, dress for success, and approach employers. MSUMA’s message is clear: everyone, not just marketing majors, needs to learn how to market themselves.
Beyond career prep, MSUMA offers students opportunities to meet industry professionals, with regular guest speakers from companies like Hyatt. For members like Brooke Leroux, these visits have led to valuable connections and job opportunities.
MSUMA is also working to improve the marketing curriculum at MSU, focusing on practical skills over theoretical knowledge. Members like Paulina Valdes appreciate how the group helps students explore the diverse career paths available in marketing while building their confidence along the way.
