EAST LANSING- MSU travels to Palm Springs, California, to compete in the Acrisure Classic against the California Golden Bears.
The Spartans are currently undefeated, with a 6-0 start to their dominant season.
MSU is coming off a 57-point win over Detroit Mercy, and their offense is ranked first in Division 1 with a scoring margin of 50.5 points.
Graduate guard Julia Ayrault sat out last week’s game due to a slight injury.
“She just had a little tweak at practice,” Fralick said. “Right now, she’s day to day, so we’re hoping to get her back and ready soon.”
The offense certainly did not disappoint against the Titans, despite being without Ayrault, who is one of their leading scorers.
However, against West Coast teams like Cal, the Spartans will need to perform at full strength.
Freshman forward Juliann Woodard had a breakout performance in last week’s game, with 17 points and four rebounds.
Woodard went 3-4 from the arc and continued to show her long-range talent as a freshman.
The Spartan offense is supported by their defense, which ranks fourth nationally in holding opponents to just 45.8 points per game.
MSU has been experimental with the trap and the full court press this season, forcing the Titans to 32 turnovers.
This lockdown defense will need to continue to stop Cal, a team that is also 6-0.
Cal leads the Atlantic Coast with four home wins and two away, including wins against Auburn and Gonzaga.
VanSooten is a transfer from Oregon and has a sort of familiarity with the West Coast style of play.
“I definitely know a few things about Cal, and Arizona, so any way I can help out I’m gonna help out,” VanSlooten said.
This will be the Spartans first true test of the season, and a win against California could solidify their status, and push them to the NCAA rankings.
The Spartans and Golden Bears will face off Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET.
