EAST LANSING– On Monday, Michigan State Hockey was named the consensus No.1 team in the nation in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls.
This is the first time the Spartans have been ranked No.1 in both polls since April 2007, the last time they won the national championship.
The Spartans began the season as the No.4 team in the country. But after a split with the No. 2 Boston College Eagles, the Spartans haven’t lost, winning seven straight games.
While the Spartans have taken care of business, other top teams have looked vulnerable.
Last week, the Spartans ranked second in the polls behind the defending champion Denver Pioneers. However the Pioneers were swept by the No.19/20 Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe, AZ. and dropped to No.2 spot.
The Big Ten-leading Minnesota Golden Gophers dropped a game to Bemidji State last week which slid them down the rankings.
In the USCHO.com poll, the Spartans received 38 out of 50 first-place votes. In the USA Hockey poll, the Spartans received 25 out of 34 first-place votes.
The Spartans are currently second in the Big Ten standings after starting 4-0 in conference play. In those four games, the Spartans have outscored opponents 20-9.
The Spartans are looking to defend their 2023 Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.
The Michigan Wolverines, the team that eliminated the Spartans in the 2023 NCAA Tournament are quietly chasing the Spartans down as they have risen up to No. 6 in both polls.
MSU will be back in action at Munn Ice Arena hosting the Lindenwood Lions on Friday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m.
