EAST LANSING- The MLB has announced their awards over the past several days on the MLB network.
Rookie of the Year took place on Monday with Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Luis Gil of the New York Yankees winning those. Manager of the Year took place on Tuesday with Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians and Pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers winning.
Tonight was the Cy Young Award given out to the best pitchers in the American and National League.
Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves won the National League Cy Young tonight, more importantly, the AL Cy Young was up for grabs.
Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal was in the race having competition from Seth Lugo of the Kansas City Royals and Emanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians. However, learning of the votes counted there was no competition for this award.
Tarik Skubal won the award unanimously receiving all 30 first-place votes in his favor to earn his first Cy Young award. Skubal would become the fifth tiger to win this award following in the footsteps of Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Willie Hernandez, and Denny McLain.
Skubal posted an 18-4 record as the Tiger’s ace with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts. All of these would be leading in the American League to give Skubal the Triple Crown.
Skubal after receiving the award would say on the MLB network “It’s pretty special. All of the hard work, all of that stuff that goes on behind the scenes in moments like this make it extremely worth it.”
Skubal’s teammates would jump to social media congratulating the star on this award and manager AJ Hinch would say on X “Never a doubt! Absolutely loved watching you dominate this season, Skub. Congrats!”
Skubal also was an all-star this season and was the Tigers nominee for the Roberto Clemente award given to the player in the MLB that best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement, and the individual’s contribution to the team.
Skubal is a star and was well deserving of this award, congratulations to the Unanimous AL Cy Young Tarik Skubal.
