EAST LANSING- No. 5 Michigan State advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA women’s soccer championship for the second straight season after defeating No. 4 Texas 3-2 in overtime Friday night.
On Sunday, the Spartans will now face the No. 1 seeded Duke in Durham, North Carolina.
The Blue Devils shut out No. 8 Texas Tech in the round of 32, with a final score of 3-0 and extending their record to 16-2-1 overall.
This is the Blue Devils’ 50th NCAA tournament win and 20th appearance in the Sweet 16.
Graduate midfielder Maggie Graham, named the 2024 ACC midfielder of the year, netted two goals in the match against the Red Raiders and has collected 33 points on the season. She now leads the team with 14 total goals.
As for the Spartans, graduate forward Mackenzie Anthony also netted two goals during their match. One of which was the golden goal to secure the victory for the green and white in overtime.
Sophomore midfielder Bella Najera also notched a goal against the Longhorns, putting her as the team leader with 8 goals on the season.
This will be the first meeting between the Spartans and the Blue Devils.
The winner of this match will advance to the quarterfinals scheduled for Nov. 29 and Nov. 30, facing either No. 3 Iowa or No. 7 Virginia.
The first touch is set for 6 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN+.
