EAST LANSING- MSU continues their season 4-0 after last Thursday’s win over Eastern Kentucky, 96-54.
MSU looks to continue their win streak in their first away game of the season against Western Michigan this Sunday.
The Spartans struggled against Eastern Kentucky in the first half, leading EKU by only four points at halftime.
This Eastern Kentucky defense put the pressure on the Spartans, forcing MSU to seven turnovers in the first half.
Coach Fralick quoted the first half performance as “soft” and felt as though her team was expecting the ball to be handed to them.
Despite this rough start for the Spartans, they were able to come out of the half ready to play with the power and aggressiveness of junior forward Grace VanSlooten, who made a strong showing in her return from illness.
VanSlooten finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and her offensive prowess was exactly what the Spartans needed to storm back.
The duo of graduate guard Julia Ayrault and junior guard Theryn Hallock also took over in the third quarter.
Ayrault put up a team high of 19 points with eight rebounds, and Hallock put up 14 points and nine assists.
The MSU defense came alive in the fourth quarter, forcing 12 second half turnovers and 17 defensive rebounds.
The offensive performance in the second half fired up this Spartan team, and they were able to keep their foot on the gas,outscoring EKU by 38 points.
As MSU travels to Kalamazoo for their first away game, the Spartans need to clean up their mistakes and keep their offensive performance consistent throughout the matchup.
With their first away game test of the year, MSU looks to take on Western Michigan this Sunday in Kalamazoo at 5 p.m.
