EAST LANSING– Following a dominant 107-43 victory over Oakland, Michigan State looks to keep its momentum rolling as Ivy League foe Yale comes to the Breslin Center.
The key for MSU ahead of this contest remains to play aggressively on both ends of the court, as the Spartans have been incredibly disruptive on defense and remain physically imposing offensively.
In their opener, the MSU defense forced 33 turnovers and a 0-17 shooting performance from three. On almost every miss or turnover forced, the Spartans found a way to get out and run in an impressive transition game that led to 38 points on the fast break and 44 off turnovers.
When the Spartans actually took the time to run an offensive set, they either got great looks in the post or from beyond the arc.
Junior forward Grace VanSlooten led the charge inside by scoring 15 and grabbing four offensive boards, aiding in MSU’s 48 paint points and 19 on second-chance opportunities.
The Spartans also found success from long range and finding good shots, going a respectable 11-24 from three with four different guards hitting at least two.
In Yale’s opener, the Bulldogs needed a 26-point fourth quarter to earn a three-point victory over Monmouth.
Containing the Yale guard duo of senior Mackenzie Egger and first-year Marisa Chapman should be a massive assignment for MSU defensively. Both recorded 39 minutes on the court and combined to score just over 65% of the Bulldogs’ points.
Egger went 11-19 from the field, 3-4 from three, and finished with 25 points and nine rebounds against Monmouth.
In her debut for Yale, Chapman made an immediate impact by earning a double-double consisting of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Much like MSU, Yale displayed elite perimeter defending in their opener by allowing zero made threes in a 0-11 defensive performance.
Both MSU and Yale look to move to 2-0 on the season Friday, Nov. 8, with tip set for 7:00 p.m.
