EAST LANSING-Michigan State Volleyball travels to the East Coast for their next matchup, as they travel to College Park to battle the Maryland Terrapins Thursday night.
The Spartans are looking to turn things around and snap their losing streak. MSU comes into this matchup, losing three straight and 12 out of 13. Their last matchup was a loss in four sets to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Spartans have struggled in conference play, but have had the misfortune of playing several ranked teams. The Spartans currently sit near the bottom of the Big Ten and are looking to climb the ranks.
Michigan State needs its key players to step up in this match if they want to emerge victorious. Junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson currently leads the team in kills with 272 and Senior setter Julia Bishop leads the team in assists with 508. Anderson also has 17 aces on the season, tied for a team-high with senior defensive specialist Nalani Iosia.
Iosia also leads the Big Ten with 372 digs on the defensive front, while Sophomore middle blocker Zuzzana Kulig leads the team with 114 blocks, currently 3rd in the Big Ten.
The Terrapins are led by graduate student pin hitter Samantha Schnitta, who leads the team with 269 kills while fifth-year setter Sydney Dowler leads the Terps in assists with 464.
Schnitta also leads the conference in aces with 61. On the defensive side, fifth-year libero Lily Gunter leads the team with 270 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Eva Rohrbach leads the team in blocks, racking up 73 on the season.
The Terrapins head into this matchup also struggling in conference play, losing eight straight. The Terrapins were swept in three sets in their previous matchup, as the Indiana Hoosiers defeated them at home.
The Terps also sit near the bottom of the Big Ten standings, sitting just one spot ahead of the Spartans. The last time these two teams faced off, the Spartans swept all three sets at home on November 3, 2023.
Michigan State has been successful in the past, as they lead the series all-time with 15 wins in 18 matchups.
Both teams are looking to put a stop to their skids in this matchup and gain some momentum. As the season draws to a close, both teams are looking for some positives that they can build on for the future.
