EAST LANSING- Michigan State women’s basketball is set to take on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday night at the Breslin Center for the home opener of their regular season.
MSU is coming off a slam dunk win over Wayne State in their exhibition game last week after beating the Warriors 101-40.
The Spartans looked dominant on the defensive end, allowing Wayne State only five points at halftime.
The Spartans’ talent was on full display, with junior forward Grace VanSlooten putting up 16 points and six rebounds.
VanSlooten’s performance got her named on the Cheryl Miller Award Preseason Watchlist.
First-year center Inés Sotelo had a huge showing in her MSU debut, putting up 13 points and two rebounds.
MSU looked great on the rebounding side of things against Wayne State. Junior guard Abbey Kimball put up a team-high nine rebounds with four points.
The rebounding game was highlighted by head coach Robyn Fralick, as a goal for the Spartans to improve on this season.
“There has to be a habit of it, (rebounding) every single time a shot goes up,” Fralick said.
MSU needs to continue to be aggressive at the net and capitalize off forced turnovers.
Coach Fralick also mentioned that the Spartans’ free-throw shooting needs to improve. The Spartans made 16-25 free throws and 5-13 from the arc.
Offensive shooting will have to be more efficient against tougher opponents. Nonetheless, the Spartans were still able to put up 101 points.
Oakland won their exhibition game against Rochester Christian University, 91-66. Both teams look to increase their win streak in the regular season.
MSU and Oakland will face off Tuesday at 6:30 at the Breslin Center.
