EAST LANSING – Michigan State men’s basketball is set to open its season against Monmouth University on Nov. 4 at the Breslin Center.
MSU took on Northern Michigan and Ferris State in a pair of exhibitions in October. The Spartans topped the Wildcats 70-53 on Oct. 13 and the Bulldogs 85-67 on Oct. 29.
Last Tuesday, senior forward Frankie Fidler led MSU with 14 points against Ferris State. Sophomore forward Coen Carr and sophomore forward Xavier Booker also racked up double-digits with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Junior forward Jaxon Kohler led in rebounds with 11 and junior guard Tre Holloman led in assists with nine. Ferris State scored 10 points off of MSU’s 14 turnovers. Senior center Szymon Zapala led in turnovers with four.
Scouting Monmouth
This will be the first meeting between MSU and Monmouth. The Spartans have a 4-1 all-time record against teams that currently make up the Colonial Athletic Association.
Monmouth played in an exhibition against Rhode Island College on Oct. 25. The Hawks succeeded the Anchorman 95-65 with redshirt sophomore guard Andrew Ball leading with 15 points.
Sophomore forward Cornelius Robinson III and junior center Dok Muordar led Monmouth in rebounds with nine and eight respectively. The Hawks turned the ball over 14 times granting the Anchorman 17 points off those turnovers.
Muordar is a 7-foot-1 transfer from Cleveland State. Joining him in Monmouth’s transfer class are junior guard Madison Durr (The Citadel), senior forward Chris Morgan (North Texas), sophomore guard Aric Demings (Utah Tech) and graduate forward Jordan Meka (Georgia Tech).
Redshirt sophomore forward Jaret Valencia and junior guard Jack Collins were both selected for the Preseason CAA Awards. Valencia was selected to the Preasons All-CAA Second Team and Collins was an honorable mention selection.
