EAST LANSING- Michigan State Women’s Basketball season is nearly underway, as they take on the Wayne State Warriors in an exhibition game this Monday at the Breslin Center.
MSU Women’s Basketball announced their 2024-25 captains, graduate guard Nyla Hampton, and graduate guard Julia Ayrault.
The Spartans will be coached by Robyn Fralick, who is entering her second season as the MSU Women’s Basketball head coach.
Fralick made history last season as the Spartans head coach, becoming the first to make it to the NCAA tournament in her first season of coaching at MSU.
The Spartans finished the 2023-24 season with a 22-9 record and finished fourth in the Big Ten.
MSU suffered a devastating loss in the first round of the 2024 NCAA tournament to North Carolina, where they lost 59-56.
In the offseason, Fralick added four new transfers to the MSU roster, graduate guard and captain Nyla Hampton, graduate guard Jaddan Simmons, junior guard Emma Shumate, and junior forward Grace VanSlooten.
In coach Fralick’s preseason media day interview, Fralick talks about filling the spot of DeeDee Hagemann at the point.
Fralick states that graduate guards Theryn Hallock, Nyla Hampton, and Jaddan Simmons played a ton of minutes at the point and notes the versatility the Spartans have available to fill that position.
The Spartan Freshman class is filled with four new faces, guard Sinai Douglas, forward Juliann Woodard, forward Helen Holley, and center Inés Sotelo.
Fralick mentioned how becoming a better rebounding team on both ends of the court would take this team to the next level.
Fralick also discusses the addition of Grace VanSlooten, looking to add more size and depth to the rebounding game.
The biggest goal for the Spartans this season is to make some noise in the NCAA tournament and utilize their transfers to help build the team’s chemistry.
Wayne State plays in the NCAA Division II, and they finished the 2023-24 season with a 16-22 record.
This exhibition game should be a good opportunity for the Spartans to get prepared for their season, and gain experience with their overall style of play.
The Spartans and Warriors will face off on Monday at 6:30 PM at the Breslin Center.
