East Lansing—Michigan State volleyball hits the road this weekend, heading West for the first time in the new-look Big Ten, and faces off against UCLA this Saturday night.
The Spartans look to carry their momentum from Thursday after MSU beat USC, snapping their nine-game losing streak.
Starting the year struggling, MSU has a record of 8-12 and a conference record of 1-8. The record doesn’t do the Spartans justice, as MSU has had a tough schedule, playing against six ranked teams at the end of this weekend.
If MSU continues to win, they will need Junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson and senior outside hitter Julia Bishop to keep producing the way they have. Anderson leads the team with 229 kills and 17 aces on the season, and Bishop has 429 assists and 147 digs on the season.
MSU will also need sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig to maintain her performance as she is third in the Big Ten with blocks with 102 and averages 1.48 blocks per set. Kulig also has added 13 aces on the season.
The Bruins are led by junior outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette and graduate student middle blocker Anna Dodson. Cheridyn leads the squad with 266 kills, and Dodson has added 146 kills of her own.
Junior outside hitter Grayce Olson has also added 167 kills this season, which ranks third on the team and Olson also has nine assists this season.
At 9-9, the Bruins have been struggling, with a record of 3-6 in conference play. The Bruins are coming off an impressive victory against Northwestern, beating them three sets to none.
Both of these teams look to get back on track as they carry momentum into the second half of Big Ten play.
This matchup will take place on Saturday at 7 p.m., at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, California, and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
