EAST LANSING- Michigan State women’s volleyball got swept by No. 2 Nebraska in the comforts of the Breslin Center last night in front of 8,291 fans, the second-highest ever in program history.
Nebraska came into East Lansing looking to continue their reign at the conference’s top. They proved no different.
Preston struck first in set one, leading to an early Spartans 8-6 advantage over the Huskers. Preston recorded kills to break up ties, putting the Spartans in front for a 10-9 lead shortly after.
Just before the media timeout, junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson added a kill to settle for a 13-13 tie.
Following the media timeout, the Huskers went on a 12-2 run to win the first set 25-15.
The Huskers didn’t hold back in the second set, quickly gaining a 19-8 advantage over the Spartans. Sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig racked up three kills and a block to assist the Spartans in their 9-3 run to get back within reach of the Huskers.
Despite the Spartans’ determination, the Huskers would take set two 25-19.
Looking to avoid a sweep, Preston started off with a block assist to strike first, and Anderson followed with a kill, her first of seven this set. Two back-to-back kills by Anderson would get the Spartans in arms reach behind Nebraska 13-11 heading into the media timeout.
Anderson racked up six more kills to keep the Spartans in the game, but the Huskers would go on a 7-2 run to sweep the match.
Freshman defensive specialist Kayla Foley made her collegiate debut and tallied four digs. Senior libero Nalani Iosia rallied up an impressive 13 digs, a match-high.
The pair of junior outside hitters, Akasha Anderson and Taylor Preston racked up a sizzling total of nine kills.
Michigan State fell to 7-11 and has yet to win a conference match. Nebraska improves to 17-1 and remains atop of the conference.
The Spartans take on Washington at home Sunday at 1 p.m. to continue homecoming weekend festivities.
