Love is something that everyone experiences and feels in different ways — negative, positive, neutral, you name it. It’s what makes us human, and that itself is something special. “After the First Kiss” is a song I first heard when I saw her in concert in July. It was right at the end of her set, and she brought out her girlfriend and sang it to her in front of the crowd. I just want to say, if that isn’t love then I don’t know what is. Listening to this song and seeing just how giddy Faye was around her girlfriend and singing this song to her was something special.
Regardless of how you’re feeling right now in your life, there’s something to be said about this song. You can pretty much apply it to anything that you love, like a hobby or the more directly mentioned person. Finding something or someone who just fits who you are is a feeling like no other. Maybe you find a sport and it just clicks, or you meet someone in one of your classes and hit it off immediately. It’s such a comforting feeling, and I feel like this song captures that feeling perfectly.
“I make plans to see her twice /
After the first kiss /
I take her picture when I close my eyes /
After the first kiss”
Not that Faye Webster’s songs are inherently sad, but this song is a pretty clear change in her usual tone, which can be more attributed to longing or a kind of melancholy. It’s a nice change of pace. There’s something to be said about her ability to portray a story and really give you that feeling of contentment through her music. While this is a change of tonal pace from her usual style, she absolutely nailed it, and you can tell this song means something to her.
